As one of our editors recently stated, dank beats scream Christmas festivity, and so we’re leaving you with a little parting gift in the form of ‘Reputation’. The result of a collaboration between dark-pop songwriter Mothica and experimental producer Icarus Moth, who both currently reside in New York but found each other over the Internet. Mothica’s (aka McKenzie Ellis) smokey pop vocal is a perfectly suited to Icarus Moth’s (aka Nathan Miller) digital magic, and that’s probably because as an original demo written by Mothica, the electronics have been shaped around her voice first and foremost. It’s actually very different from the way these EDM tracks come about, with vocals laid over the top of a pre-mixed track, but here Icarus Moth’s beats sit right alongside Mothica’s words. Since connecting, the pair have written a total of six songs together, ‘Reputation’ being the first, so we really do have something to look forward to after the festive season is over. - HT
